STPD 4044 Sustainability of Tropical Heritage (STH)

Course Structure

Core Content

The course on Sustainability of Tropical Heritage is coordinated by Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) and Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), UKM. The course introduces and provide you with knowledge of a tropical ecosystem. Malaysia's cultural and economic environment and the value of sustainable tropical heritage.

You will learn about the concept of nature heritage, sustainable development of nature conservation. You will also study the physical landscape and bio-diversity of Malaysia's tropical ecosystem.

 

Course Objectives

To absorb and appreciate the unique tropical heritage and diverse culture of the Malaysian community. Specifically it will:

  • Enable you to understand better the natural heritage concept and observe the integrated conservation efforts for sustainability and eco-tourism;

  • Allow you to experience at first hand and document visually various geological and biological heritage of Langkawi Island, Chini Lake, Danum Valley and Kinabatangan River;

  • Enable you to analyse the effectiveness of the various conservation initiatives in Malaysia.

During the period of this programme, students will participate in:

  • 1 week of lecture session

  • 2 weeks of field trips + presentation and closing ceremony.

 

Students will participate in field trips to Kilim Karst Geoforest Park Langkawi and Fraser Hills, Pahang.*subject to change

Build international friendships through 'buddy system' in which you ( as a visiting student) are partnered with local student from UKM.

 

Cost of the Programme

USD 2,200.00 (Inclusive of accommodations, food, course materials, field trips and transportation in Malaysia).

Language Proficiency

You will learn basic conversational Malay language.

General Knowledge

 

You will learn about Malaysia's socio-economic and cultural background.
