Yes. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is organizing it for overseas students who wish to complete their respective university summer school program.

The Head of Project who will look after the students for the entire month the project is run.

Will there be any back-up if a student runs out of money in Malaysia?
If they have internationally recognized credit cards, it should be fine.

Do you provide students with emergency phone numbers and numbers for their family to use.

Yes. We are providing students with a Visitor’s Kit with the numbers inside.

 

Will the emergency contact numbers mobile phones work out in Malaysia?

Yes.

Security for dorm/hostel and while traveling, what does it consist of?

2 levels - guards at the hostels and the presence of the Vice Principal of the college who resides in one of the blocks. While on the road, the lecturers and the Head of the project will see to security arrangement.

If the student gets injured or ill, what is the procedure and plan to take care of her/him?

A medical officer will provide immediate attention in case of emergencies. The normal procedure and plan in taking care of sick and injured students for our university students will apply. This plan will be uploaded onto the website once it is ready.

 

Will it be to keep in touch with the students?

Yes, through the internet, through the cell phone and through the organizer - 603 8921 4188 / 4187 or alternately check out our contact detail at the visitor kit or from our website.

What should the students pack?

Clothes meant for field trips a must. Students should be prepared to get dirty and sweaty. Clothes for formal lectures too. A set of formal attire will be handy. Sneakers a must.

What kind of bag should they bring (rucksack or wheely suitcase?)

Rucksack for better mobility during field trips.

Is there anything specific they will need to bring?

Not at the moment.

Will the students be met at the airport on arrival?

Yes. And also for departure for home.

When she is traveling around the country, what are they traveling in and where are they going?

Airplanes as students will be criss crossing the country and buses for land transfers.

What happens if a student misses his/her flight out?

She/ He has to get another one. We will try and assist.

What will the University insurance cover?

Normal coverage for students. No extreme sports.

Medical Advice

Innoculations/insect bites/malaria Malaysia is quite safe from malaria and other diseases of 3rd world countries. Bring repellents if need to.

What happens if a student is taken ill/has an accident in Malaysia?

Hostel. Single room where available.

University Campus (2 weeks) and 2 weeks at hostel on sites of field trips.

Yes, the fee includes the provision of all meals.

Western food and traditional Malaysian cuisine if they are not afraid to sample it.

Mainly Malaysian food but will have Western and vegetarian if there is a request.

What arrangements will there be for washing for clothes?

 

Student can wash personally at campus or the launderette.

 

What does the hostel consist of?

 

3 blocks of apartments of 16 air-conditioned rooms in each. The self-contained blocks come with a living, dinning, kitchen, washroom with 3 baths and 2 toilets and even a washing machine for laundry.

What are the shower facilities like?

 

3 bathrooms with a water heater to be shared with 15 other students. Towels, bath soap and shampoo will be provided daily.

What do the sleeping facilities consist of?

 

Each student will be accommodated in a single air-conditioned room with a bed, desk and chair, a wardrobe, a blanket and a table fan. In addition, bedsheets will be changed every other day.

Can they bring a laptop, cell phone?

 

Yes, if they wants to. We will provide free internet access for the duration of the course for students to keep in touch with family and friends, and for research and entertainment as well. Cell phones can be used if students are prepared to pay for the charges.

 

Are there places to charge both?

 

Yes, the hostel has plugs for such purposes.

What happens if a student wants to change group, is unhappy or homesick?

 

Not encouraged for administrative purposes to change. Students have to be mentally and physically prepared for the whole duration. Will provide professional counseling if homesick. Have enough activities to keep students occupied as they will paired with our students under the “Buddy System” hosts.

 

What happens if a student wants to extend his/her trip to Malaysia at the end of the 3-week summer school?

 

Students will have to make their own arrangements. Will assist if possible.

Do you have the fridge in the room (kitchen)?

 

Yes.

What is the detailed itinerary?

 

The students will have 2 weeks of lectures on campus and 2 weeks of field study trips to 5 states; Selangor, Pahang, Kedah, Sabah and Sarawak of Malaysia. A detailed itinerary will be uploaded onto our website which is being built for the benefit all parties (students, parents, teachers and university officials). But the detailed information will only be supplied pending the approval of the university management due to copyright issues.

While taking the 2 weeks of classes, where is he/she staying?

 

In the hostel on campus and in clean and functional dormitories during field trips.

Where are the classes being taken?

 

At the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Center for Sustainability Research (LESTARI) on campus and at the sites of the field trips.

 

What are the classes?

 

The Indigenous Communities course covers the culture, social structure and livelihood of the indigenous people such as the Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia, Kadazans of Sabah and Ibans of Sarawak while the Sustainability of Tropical Heritage course deals with the sustainable research on forest, water and mineral resources.

Not exactly but the 2 will come together during field trips.

Lectures, no. But field trips, yes.

You get to keep your room on campus while away on field trips. So you off load things you don't want to bring along.

Bring a torch, insect repellent, sun screen, jumper (for Mt. Kinabalu), walking shoes, hat and comfortable clothes for hot places please.
