SKZA 2014 Indigenous Communities of Malaysia (ICM)

Course Structure

The course on Indigenous Communities is coordinated by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UKM. The course introduces and provides you with selected topics based on continuity and change of culture of indigenous communities in Malaysia.

Core Content

You will learn about the unique culture, recent marginalisation, the process of cultural transformation and the future of indigenous communities in Malaysia.

 

Course Objectives

For this course, specifically it will:

  • Introduce you to the study of the unique cultures of indigenous communities in Malaysia and related issues;

  • Enable you to understand the communities's history and recent marginalisation and the process of cultural transformation;

  • Allow you to experience at first hand and document visually various cultural elements of a specific indigenous communities;

  • Enhance your understanding of various forces that confront the traditions and culture of the indigenous communities.

Course Activities

During the period of this programme, students will participate in:

  • 1 week of lecture session

  • 2 weeks of field trips + presentation and closing ceremony.

 

Students will participate in field trips to Orang Asli community of Pulau Carey, National Park - Kuala Tahan, Royal Belum - Pahang and Indigenous Ecotourism at Port Dickson.*subject to change

Other

Build international friendships through 'buddy system' in which you ( as a visiting student) are partnered with local student from UKM.

 

Cost of the Programme

USD 2,200.00 (Inclusive of accommodations, food, course materials, field trips and transportation in Malaysia).

Language Proficiency

You will learn basic conversational Malay language.

General Knowledge

 

You will learn about Malaysia's socio-economic and cultural background.
